Context of Acts 10:7

5Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. 6He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.” And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually. 8So when he had explained all these things to them, he sent them to Joppa. 9The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.

Commentaries on Acts 10:7

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7And a devout soldier - It has already been remarked that Cornelius had taken care to instruct his family in Divine things; and it appears also that he had been attentive to the spiritual interests of his regiment. We do not find that it was then, even among the Romans, considered a disgrace for a military officer to teach his men lessons of morality, and piety towards God, whatever it may be in some Christian countries in the present time.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7A devout soldier - A pious man. This is an instance of the effect of piety in a military officer. Few people have more influence; and in this case the effect was seen not only in the piety of his family, but of this attending soldier. Such men have usually been supposed to be far from the influence of religion; but this instance shows that even the disadvantages of a camp are not necessarily hostile to the existence of piety. Compare Luke 3:14.Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-8a centurion: This was the highest rank for an officer in the Roman army who was not commissioned. He led a century, a group of about 100 men. Luke often describes centurions positively (10:22; 21:32; 22:25–26; 23:17, 23; 27:6, 11, 43; 28:16; Luke 7:1–10; 23:47). Luke wanted to show that Christianity was not against Roman officials or institutions. It could, like Judaism, be permitted in the Roman Empire (see Acts Book Introduction, “Purposes of Acts…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 7-87-8. when the angel ... was departed, he called--immediately doing as directed, and thereby showing the simplicity of his faith. a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually--of the "soldiers under him," such as the centurion at Capernaum had (Mt 8:9). Who this "devout soldier" was, can only be matter of conjecture. Da Costa [Four Witnesses] gives a number of ingenious reasons for thinking that, having attached himself henceforth to…Read the comment
