Context of 2 Peter 1:13

11and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 12So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, 14because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.

Commentaries on 2 Peter 1:13

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13As long as I am in this tabernacle - By tabernacle we are to understand his body; and hence several of the versions have , body, instead of , tabernacle. Peter's mode of speaking is very remarkable: as long as I AM in this tabernacle, so then the body was not Peter, but Peter dwelt in that body. Is not this a proof that St. Peter believed his soul to be very distinct from his body? As a man's house is the place where he dwells, so the body is the house…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Yea, I think it meet - I think it becomes me as an apostle. It is my appropriate duty; a duty which is felt the more as the close of life draws near. As long as I am in this tabernacle - As long as I live; as long as I am in the body. The body is called a tabernacle, or tent, as that in which the soul resides for a little time. See the notes at 2 Corinthians 5:1. To stir you up, by putting you in remembrance - To excite or arouse you to a diligent…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-15Verses 12-15 We must be established in the belief of the truth, that we may not be shaken by every wind of doctrine; and especially in the truth necessary for us to know in our day, what belongs to our peace, and what is opposed in our time. The body is but a tabernacle, or tent, of the soul. It is a mean and movable dwelling. The nearness of death makes the apostle diligent in the business of life. Nothing can so give composure in the prospect, or in the…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-15Peter was writing at the end of his life, and 2 Peter is similar to works that belong to a popular Jewish genre called the testament. In this genre, an older and respected leader gives final instructions to his children or to the people under his care while he is near death (see Deuteronomy 31–33; Joshua 24). This genre is especially well known from a Jewish work called The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs.Read the comment
