Context of 1 Corinthians 6:2
1If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 4Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church?

Commentaries on 1 Corinthians 6:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2The saints shall judge the world? - Nothing can be more evident than that the writers of the New Testament often use ̔ , the world, to signify the Jewish people; and sometimes the Roman empire, and the Jewish state; and in the former sense it is often used by our Lord. When, says he, the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, then shall ye sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel, Matthew 19:28. It is supposed that he refers to…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Do ye not know - The object of this verse is evidently to show that Christians were qualified to determine controversies which might arise among themselves. This the apostle shows by reminding them that they shall be engaged in determining matters of much more moment than those which could arise among the members of a church on earth; and that if qualified for that, they must be regarded as qualified to express a judgment on the questions which might…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3One day, believers will help judge the world. Even angels will assist alongside the Son of Man, who is the Judge of all people (see Daniel 7:13, 22, 27; Matthew 19:28; John 5:27; Acts 17:31; Revelation 3:21; 20:4). Because of this responsibility, Christians should resolve their disagreements over small matters.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. Do ye not know--as a truth universally recognized by Christians. Notwithstanding all your glorying in your "knowledge," ye are acting contrary to it (1Co 1:4, 5; 8:1). The oldest manuscripts have "Or" before "know ye not"; that is, "What! (expressing surprise) know ye not," &c. saints ... judge--that is, "rule," including judgment: as assessors of Christ. Mt 19:28, "judging," that is, "ruling over."
