Context of Matthew 8:28
26Jesus said to them, “Why do you cowards have so little faith?” Then he got up, gave an order to the wind and the sea, and the sea became very calm. 27The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!” When he arrived in the territory of the Gadarenes on the other side ⌞of the Sea of Galilee⌟, two men met him. They were possessed by demons and had come out of the tombs. No one could travel along that road because the men were so dangerous. 29They shouted, “Why are you bothering us now, Son of God? Did you come here to torture us before it is time?” 30A large herd of pigs was feeding in the distance.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28The country of the Gergesenes - This word is variously written in the MSS, and versions; Gergasenes, Gerasenes, Gadarenes, Gergesions, and Gersedonians, The three first are supported by the greater authorities. They might have all been names of the same place or district; but, if we depend on what Origen says, the people mentioned here could not have been the inhabitants of Gerasa, which, says he, is a city of Arabia, , , which has neither sea nor lake…Read the comment

Country of the Gergesenes - Mark Mark 5:1 says that he came into the country of the “Gadarenes.” This difference is only apparent. “Gadara” was a city not far from the Lake Gennesareth, one of the ten cities that were called “Decapolis.” See the notes at Matthew 4:25. “Gergesa” was a city about 12…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-34Verses 28-34 The devils have nothing to do with Christ as a Saviour; they neither have, nor hope for any benefit from him. Oh the depth of this mystery of Divine love; that fallen man has so much to do with Christ, when fallen angels have nothing to do with him! He 2:16. Surely here was torment, to be forced to own the excellence that is in Christ, and yet they had no part in him. The devils desire not to have any thing to do with Christ as a Ruler. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 28demon-possessed … so violent: When people were possessed by demons, they often became violent. Other signs included: fear of the Son of God (Matthew 8:29), being unable to speak (9:32; 12:22), blindness (12:22), seizures (17:15), and doing things to hurt themselves (17:15). When Jesus cast out demons, it showed that the power of God’s kingdom had entered human history (12:28).Read the comment
