Context of Mark 9:7
5Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good that we’re here. Let’s put up three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6(Peter didn’t know how to respond. He and the others were terrified.) Then a cloud overshadowed them. A voice came out of the cloud and said, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” 8Suddenly, as they looked around, they saw no one with them but Jesus. 9On their way down the mountain, Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen. They were to wait until the Son of Man had come back to life.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7a cloud: Compare Exodus 40:34–35. The voice from the cloud gave a strong correction to Peter’s suggestion: This is My beloved Son. He is not equal to Moses and Elijah. God’s voice also confirmed what Peter had said earlier (Mark 8:29). At the same time, it gently corrected Peter for rejecting the prediction Jesus made about his suffering (8:32). God told Peter and the other disciples to listen to Jesus.Read the comment
