Context of Mark 9:5
3His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone on earth could bleach them. 4Then Elijah and Moses appeared to them and were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good that we’re here. Let’s put up three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6(Peter didn’t know how to respond. He and the others were terrified.) 7Then a cloud overshadowed them. A voice came out of the cloud and said, “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2-10Verses 2-10 And after six days - See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 17:1-9. Mark 9:3 No fuller - Rather, no “scourer.” The office of the person here mentioned was to “scour” or “whiten” cloth; not to “full” it, or to render it thicker. Mark 9:6 He wist not - He “knew not.” He was desirous of saying something, and he knew not what would be proper.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6The idea to put up three shelters as memorials treats Moses, Elijah, and Jesus as equals (see Leviticus 23:33–43; Numbers 29:12–34). But this idea ignored Peter’s earlier confession that Jesus is the Messiah (Mark 8:29). It also ignored that only Jesus had been transfigured (his appearance changed and showed his glory, 9:2–3).Read the comment
