Context of Mark 9:5
3His clothes became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them. 4And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— 6because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid. 7And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2-10Verses 2-10 And after six days - See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 17:1-9. Mark 9:3 No fuller - Rather, no “scourer.” The office of the person here mentioned was to “scour” or “whiten” cloth; not to “full” it, or to render it thicker. Mark 9:6 He wist not - He “knew not.” He was desirous of saying something, and he knew not what would be proper.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-6The idea to put up three shelters as memorials treats Moses, Elijah, and Jesus as equals (see Leviticus 23:33–43; Numbers 29:12–34). But this idea ignored Peter’s earlier confession that Jesus is the Messiah (Mark 8:29). It also ignored that only Jesus had been transfigured (his appearance changed and showed his glory, 9:2–3).Read the comment
