Context of Mark 9:31
29He told them, “This kind of spirit can be forced out only by prayer.” 30They left that place and were passing through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where he was because he was teaching his disciples. He taught them, “The Son of Man will be betrayed and handed over to people. They will kill him, but on the third day he will come back to life.” 32The disciples didn’t understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him. 33Then they came to Capernaum. While Jesus was at home, he asked the disciples, “What were you arguing about on the road?”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-40Verses 30-40 The time of Christ's suffering drew nigh. Had he been delivered into the hands of devils, and they had done this, it had not been so strange; but that men should thus shamefully treat the Son of man, who came to redeem and save them, is wonderful. Still observe that when Christ spake of his death, he always spake of his resurrection, which took the reproach of it from himself, and should have taken the grief of it from his disciples.
