Context of Luke 24:26

24Some of our men went to the tomb and found it empty, as the women had said, but they didn’t see him.” 25Then Jesus said to them, “How foolish you are! You’re so slow to believe everything the prophets said! Didn’t the Messiah have to suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27Then he began with Moses’ Teachings and the Prophets to explain to them what was said about him throughout the Scriptures. 28When they came near the village where they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther.

Commentaries on Luke 24:26

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 26Ought not Christ to have suffered - , Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer. This was the way in which sin must be expiated, and, without this, no soul could have been saved. The suffering Messiah is he alone by whom Israel and the world can be saved.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 26Ought not Christ … - Ought not the “Messiah.” Was there not evidence that he would do it? and was it not indispensable that he should, in order to fulfil the prophecies? The “necessity” of his suffering these things referred to “here” was that it was foretold that he “would.” The reason why it was predicted, and why it was necessary that it should occur, was that it was proper that God should manifest his justice, and do honor to his law, and secure the…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-27Verses 13-27 This appearance of Jesus to the two disciples going to Emmaus, happened the same day that he rose from the dead. It well becomes the disciples of Christ to talk together of his death and resurrection; thus they may improve one another's knowledge, refresh one another's memory, and stir up each other's devout affections. And where but two together are well employed in work of that kind, he will come to them, and make a third. Those who seek…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 25-26The prophets wrote that the Christ (the Messiah, God’s chosen king) would have to suffer. The crucifixion did not show that Jesus was not the Christ. Instead, it confirmed that he is the Christ, because Scripture had already said that the Christ would suffer and die. Jesus corrected the two disciples because they did not understand from Scripture that this had to happen (see Isaiah 50:4–9; 52:13–53:12; Psalms 2, 16, 22, 118; compare Luke 18:32; 20:17…Read the comment
