Context of Luke 14:16
14Then you will be blessed because they don’t have any way to pay you back. You will be paid back when those who have God’s approval come back to life.” 15One of those eating with him heard this. So he said to Jesus, “The person who will be at the banquet in God’s kingdom is blessed.” Jesus said to him, “A man gave a large banquet and invited many people. 17When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited, ‘Come! Everything is ready now.’ 18“Everyone asked to be excused. The first said to him, ‘I bought a field, and I need to see it. Please excuse me.’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16A great supper - Or great feast. It is said to be “great” on account of the number who were invited. Bade many - Invited many beforehand. There is little difficulty in understanding this parable. The man who made the supper is, without doubt, designed to represent God; the supper, the provisions which he has made for the salvation of people; and the invitation, the offers which he made to people, particularly to the Jews, of salvation. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-24Verses 15-24 In this parable observe the free grace and mercy of God shining in the gospel of Christ, which will be food and a feast for the soul of a man that knows its own wants and miseries. All found some pretence to put off their attendance. This reproves the Jewish nation for their neglect of the offers of Christ's grace. It shows also the backwardness there is to close with the gospel call. The want of gratitude in those who slight gospel offers…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 15-24This parable shows what was happening in the ministry of Jesus. Meanwhile, poor people and outcasts accepted the invitation (see also 1:52–53; 6:21, 25; 10:15; 18:14).Read the comment

Our Lord's reply is in substance this: "The great Feast is prepared already; the invitations are issued, but declined; the feast, notwithstanding, shall not want abundance of guests; but not one of…Read the comment
