Context of Luke 14:16
14and you will be blessed because they cannot repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous (the just, the upright).” 15When one of those who were reclining at the table with Him heard this, he said to Him, “Blessed (happy, prosperous, to be admired) is he who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” But Jesus said to him, “A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many guests; 17and at the dinner hour he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, because everything is ready now.’ 18But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have purchased a piece of land and I have to go out and see it; please consider me excused.’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 16A great supper - Or great feast. It is said to be “great” on account of the number who were invited. Bade many - Invited many beforehand. There is little difficulty in understanding this parable. The man who made the supper is, without doubt, designed to represent God; the supper, the provisions which he has made for the salvation of people; and the invitation, the offers which he made to people, particularly to the Jews, of salvation. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-24Verses 15-24 In this parable observe the free grace and mercy of God shining in the gospel of Christ, which will be food and a feast for the soul of a man that knows its own wants and miseries. All found some pretence to put off their attendance. This reproves the Jewish nation for their neglect of the offers of Christ's grace. It shows also the backwardness there is to close with the gospel call. The want of gratitude in those who slight gospel offers…Read the comment

The rich, powerful, and important people rejected his invitation to God’s banquet of salvation, so they would be left out. Meanwhile, poor people and outcasts accepted the invitation (see also 1:52–53; 6:21, 25; 10:15; 18:14).Read the comment

Our Lord's reply is in substance this: "The great Feast is prepared already; the invitations are issued, but declined; the feast, notwithstanding, shall not want abundance of guests; but not one of…Read the comment
