Context of Ephesians 1:5
3Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Through Christ, God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing that heaven has to offer. 4Before the creation of the world, he chose us through Christ to be holy and perfect in his presence. Because of his love he had already decided to adopt us through Jesus Christ. He freely chose to do this 6so that the kindness he had given us in his dear Son would be praised and given glory. 7Through the blood of his Son, we are set free from our sins. God forgives our failures because of his overflowing kindness.

Commentaries on Ephesians 1:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Having predestinated us - . As the doctrine of eternal predestination has produced much controversy in the Christian world, it may be necessary to examine the meaning of the term, that those who do use it may employ it according to the sense it has in the oracles of God. The verb , from , before, and ̔, I define, finish, bound, or terminate, whence ̔, a boundary or limit, signifies to define beforehand, and circumscribe by certain bounds or limits; and is…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Having predestinated us - On the meaning of the word here used, see the notes at Romans 1:4; Romans 8:29, note. The word used ́ prōrizōmeans properly “to set bounds before;” and then to “pre-determine.” There is the essential idea of setting bounds or limits, and of doing this beforehand. It is not that God determined to do it when it was actually done, but that he intended to do it beforehand. No language could express this more clearly, and I suppose…Read the comment

All who are chosen to happiness as the end, are chosen to holiness as the means…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. predestinated--more special in respect to the end and precise means, than "chosen" or elected. We are "chosen" out of the rest of the world; "predestinated" to all things that secure the inheritance for us (Ep 1:11; Ro 8:29). "Foreordained." by Jesus--Greek, "through Jesus." to himself--the Father (Col 1:20). Alford explains, "adoption ... into Himself," that is, so that we should be partakers of the divine nature (2Pe 1:4). Lachmann reads, "unto Him."…Read the comment
