Ephesians 1:1

Ye Shall Receive Power

Paul, September 27

YRP 279.4

As he pondered these things in his heart, Paul understood more and more the meaning of his call to be “an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God” (Ephesians 1:1). His call had come “not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father” (Galatians 1:1). The greatness of the work before him led him to give much study to the Holy Scriptures, in order that he might preach the gospel “not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect” (1 Corinthians 1:17), “but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,” that the faith of all who heard “should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God” (1 Corinthians 2:4, 5).—The Review and Herald, March 30, 1911.

Ephesians 1:1-6

I attended meeting, and spoke in the upper chamber where we assemble to worship on the Sabbath. The room was full of our people. I spoke from Ephesians: “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” [Ephesians 1:1, 2.]

12LtMs, Ms 114, 1897, par. 3

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” [Verse 3.] We should appreciate the words of the apostle. How far from narrowness is his statement. He gives praise to God because of the great spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, “according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” [Verse 4.]

12LtMs, Ms 114, 1897, par. 5

How could the language be more explicit and full? “He hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” [Verses 4, 5.] Here is the ground of our faith. You dare not risk the “suppose so,” the haphazard religion of this age, that knows so little of self-denial and self-sacrifice. This is a fashionable, convenient, self-indulgent religion. If we would be saved, we must be obedient subjects of the kingdom of God. The law of Jehovah will allow no license for transgression. He has pledged to save man from his sins, but not in his sins. We may repent, we may receive pardon, we may fix our eyes on the matchless ransom paid by Jesus Christ on the cross. “The Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all,” the whole world. [Isaiah 53:6.] Christ bore the weight of our sins, a weight sufficient to crush a world.

12LtMs, Ms 114, 1897, par. 9

Paul, in addressing his epistle to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus, says, “Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.” [Ephesians 1:2.] These words are not spoken to the souls out of Christ. All our success, all our efficiency, is in Christ. We must continually look above earthly help, higher than the greatest human power, higher than the apostles. We must fasten our faith directly upon Christ Himself. He has declared, “Without me ye can do nothing.” “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the Vine, ye are the branches. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit, for without me ye can do nothing.” [John 15:4, 5.]

12LtMs, Ms 114, 1897, par. 12

The battle cry of victory under all circumstances comes sounding down the line to our time, “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: having predestinated us to the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” [Ephesians 1:4-6.]

Please read, in connection with the message to the church at Ephesus, Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Paul had labored much for the church at Ephesus. “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ; according as He has chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love; having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, wherein He hath made us accepted in the Beloved. The first chapter of Ephesians is full of words of the richest encouragement. In this Scripture wonderful possibilities are set before us. In the epistle to the Ephesians the Lord Jesus gives to His Church precious morsels from the banquet of truth. Through the words of Paul, Jesus Christ is uplifted. The apostle desired all to behold the world’s Redeemer, “in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace; wherein He hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; having made known unto us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He hath purposed in Himself.” [Verses 7-9.] Read carefully every verse to the close of the chapter. I awoke at half past three o’clock. My heart is drawn out in prayer to God that this day we may have much of the peace and blessing of God. At family prayer I again felt the burden of supplication that the Lord would meet with us and strengthen and bless all who shall assemble together to worship the Lord. I spoke to the people assembled in regard to the necessity of a preparation of character day by day, that shall be such as God shall approve. I presented the first chapter of Ephesians, verses 1-14. The Lord led my mind out in lines of truth.

I have read your last letter to me, and the copy of your letter to Brother Shireman. I hope that Brother Shireman will listen to the counsel of his brethren. This will be his safety and his strength. The Lord has not qualified any one of us to bear the burden of the work alone. He has associated together men of different minds, that they may counsel with and assist one another. In this way the deficiency in the experience and the abilities of one is supplied by the experience and the abilities of another. The singing, led by Brother Herbert Lacey, was excellent. The voices, raised in melody of praise to God, were uplifting and encouraging. The room in which we hold our services was quite full. We shall soon have to arise and build a meetinghouse, for the room we occupy must be given to the students, as they are greatly cramped. But I shall be glad if the students crowd us out; for we greatly desire this school to be a success. We can say that it is thus far. Praise the Lord! We are willing to be crowded out of our room because of the increasing number of students.

The present term of school will, we sincerely hope, be in advance of the first term, as far as higher education is concerned. The Bible studies will be most intensely interesting. Students are to be taught to understand that Book which should ever be presented as the Book to study. The assertion that there are dark, mysterious, and incomprehensible things in the Word, things hard to be understood, perplexing and uncertain, is a false one. Please read the first, second, and third chapters of Ephesians.

I find myself comfortably resting in Sister Tuxford’s pleasant room, but it pains me to see every space filled with little knickknacks and pictures of faces. Oh, I wish it were not so. I wish it were otherwise. We had our season of prayer in the parlor and the Lord was very nigh unto us. Elder Haskell spoke to the people at Summer Hill in the forenoon. A horse and carriage was hired for us, that we could attend the meeting one mile and a half from Summer Hill without my being under the necessity of riding in the train. I was surprised to see the house full at Summer Hill, and the Lord helped me to speak. I read (Ephesians 1) and portions of the second chapter and the Lord gave me words to speak to the interested listeners. I am thankful, so thankful, that the Lord manifests His power and His grace unto His commandment-keeping people. Many testimonies were borne and the Spirit of the Lord was in the meeting. A solemn sense of the presence of God was in the meeting.

You are full of ambitious projects for a class that will not, with scarcely an exception, be capable of honoring and glorying God. You have sunk your interests deeply in a work that will not properly represent the refined, elevated character of the truth. There should be no lessening of the zeal or fervor or energy shown in the work of saving souls ready to perish. But all the time and means are not to be consumed in one line of work, while the work for God’s vineyard as a whole is neglected. Thus disproportion is brought in, and the work is swayed in wrong lines. The work is not done according to the order of the Lord, as is represented in the first and second chapters of First Corinthians and the first chapter of Ephesians.

To those who are striving to do His will, He says with a voice of heavenly sweetness, ‘Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.’ [Ephesians 1:2, 3.]

The great apostle Paul, to whom Christ revealed Himself, spoke from a heart full of love because in Ephesus there were souls who had accepted Christ as their Saviour. “Grace be to you and peace, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ; according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love; having predestinated us unto the adoption of children be Jesus Christ unto himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.” [Ephesians 1:2-7.] This is the message God has commissioned His servants to bear.

12LtMs, Ms 147, 1897, par. 39

Paul writes to the Ephesians, “That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are in earth; even in him: in whom we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will; that we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom, after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.” [Ephesians 1:10-14.]

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,” ... “who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). What is there left for us to ask, that is not included in this merciful, abundant provision? Through the merits of Christ we are blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. It is our privilege to draw nigh to God, to breathe in the atmosphere of His presence.... Nothing short of abiding in the presence of Christ will bring peace, freedom, courage, and power.3The Review and Herald, October 15, 1908.

The plan of redemption was arranged in the counsels between the Father and the Son. Then Christ pledged Himself to render an account for man if he proved disloyal. He pledged Himself to make an atonement which would unite every believing soul to God. He who lays his sins upon the Substitute and Surety, thus becoming a partaker of the divine nature, can unite with the apostle in saying, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places.” “That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.” [Ephesians 1:3; 2:7.]

God accepts us in the Beloved. Then let unbelief be dismissed. The promise is, We shall be blessed with all spiritual blessings which come from an unfailing source, the Fountain of life. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” [Ephesians 1:3.] “Who hath saved us and called us with a holy calling; not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Jesus Christ before the world began.” [2 Timothy 1:9.] Again we read, “Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God that cannot lie promised before the world began; but hath in due time manifested his word through preaching which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour.” [Titus 1:1-3.]

The heart of God is determined to do a great work for us if we will let Him. And we have the privilege of glorifying the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in accepting His great love. He loved us when we were dead in trespasses and sins, and He loves us when we permit Him to take away our sins and impute to us His righteousness. Best of all is that this working in the human agent both glorifies the name and makes glad the heart of God as He sees the subjects of His kingdom channels of light through whom He can communicate His inconceivable blessings of love and mercy and glory. It is in lifting up the believer to a state of enjoyment of His love and grace that He can make us His lightbearers to the world, and it satisfies His heart of love when we cooperate with the Lord Jesus in the great work of restoring the moral image of God in fallen man. Well might the inspired apostle in considering this wonderful theme say, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3.

“According as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.” [Verse 4.] There can be no misunderstanding here unless there is wilful blindness. We are to be holy and without blame before him in love. The condition upon which we receive an increase of grace is that we improve upon the light we already have. If we would find, we must go on continually seeking; if we would receive, we must ask; if we would have the door opened, we must knock.

Pastors and teachers should keep ever before their hearers, young and old, the instruction that will help them to gain this preparation. Each one has a positive work to do. This covenant, made from eternity, was given to Abraham nineteen hundred years before Christ came. With what interest and what intensity did Christ in humanity study the human race to see if they would avail themselves of the provision offered.

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, we now call upon all who have been in this position to consider and inquire, Am I working for Christ or the devil? God would have every man so thoroughly identified with the Word of the living God—which means true faith in the last message of mercy, the last call to sinners given to our world—that we shall demonstrate in character that we are one with Christ, that we share in the very same love that Christ expressed, that the Father loves the believing ones even as He loves His Son. He has become a partaker of His peace, His joy, His glory. This determines our true loyalty to God. It involves the highest possible measurement of character, of Christlikeness. This mystery all the human intelligences of themselves are incapable of understanding. Their learning may be considered supreme, but it is not that higher education which they can take with them into the kingdom of heaven. In his epistle to the Ephesians, Paul brings to view a kind of education that these supposed intellectual stars have not: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” These are divine heights which the true believer may reach. “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love; having predestined us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the Beloved.” [Ephesians 1:3-6.]

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory. All blessings come to us by virtue of our union with Christ. He, the Lord of hosts, “hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the earth, that we should be holy, and without blame before him in love.” [Ephesians 1:4.] He has chosen all who will receive and believe and practice the truth—chosen them to be united to Him by adoption, to be members of the royal family. He has made an atonement for sin, and all who by faith receive Him as their Saviour become sons of God.

17LtMs, Lt 123, 1902, par. 9

It is Christ’s purpose to enlighten our understanding, that we may know “what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power” to all who deny self, and, taking up the cross, follow in the footsteps of Jesus. [Ephesians 1:18, 19.] Words cannot express the blessedness of following His guidance. He pledges Himself to work with those who strive to represent Him in thought, word, and deed. He gives them assurances to encourage them when they are cast down. He speaks words that will uplift them, but He never designs to exalt them in their own estimation. He gives them the earnest of His Spirit, recognizing their weakness in wearing His yoke. “Learn of me” He says, “and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:29, 30.] Holiness of heart and works and spirit is obtained through a belief of the truth.

May the Lord help us all that we may not be beguiled by Satan. There is constant danger of falling into Satan’s concealed net which is spread for our feet. But the power of the Holy Spirit will be constantly at work to protect and defend us. We have become careless while entrusted with the most solemn truths ever committed to mortals. We but dimly comprehend what that truth can do for preachers and hearers if it is taken into the soul as a reforming power. “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love; having predestinated us unto the adoption of children ... according to the good pleasure of his will, ... according to the riches of his grace wherein he hath abounded to us in all wisdom and prudence.” [Ephesians 1:4, 5, 7, 8.]

12LtMs, Lt 45, 1897, par. 31

God help us to broaden, to reach up for the rich grace provided, and to reveal altogether a deeper experience, a deeper love for God and for one another. Then the baptism of the Holy Spirit will be seen in our midst to the glory of God. We can have a much larger, deeper experience in spiritual things. “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand.” [Verses 18-20.] There is much more for us. Shall we have the heavenly anointing to discern spiritual things? We must recover from this tame experience. We must grasp the power of God, which will make the truth all-powerful in the conversion of souls.

Just before He entered upon His public ministry, Christ received baptism at the hands of John. After His baptism He knelt upon the banks of Jordan and offered a prayer to Heaven. That prayer was heard by His Father, and the glory of God, assuming the form of a dove, descended upon Him, and a voice was heard, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” [Matthew 3:16, 17.] How many can comprehend the full meaning of these words spoken by our heavenly Father? At what a cost has salvation been given to us! What will be the portion of those who heed not the voice of mercy? What will those deserve who will not walk in the path of obedience to God’s commands? What will be the fate of those who profess to be followers of Christ, yet who do not take up the cross as humble disciples? How many set aside the Word of our loving Saviour, and because they want their own way, they close the door of their hearts against the Son of God? He was eternally rich, “yet for our sakes he became poor, that we through his poverty might be rich.” [2 Corinthians 8:9.] He was clothed with light and glory, hosts of heavenly angels were glad to do His pleasure, yet He took upon Him the nature of man, and was made “in the likeness of sinful flesh,” and became sin for us, “that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” [Romans 8:3; 2 Corinthians 5:21.] We are “accepted in the Beloved.” [Ephesians 1:6.]

Jesus Christ came off conqueror in the wilderness of temptation. And when upon Jordan’s banks, He offered such a prayer to heaven as heaven had never listened to before. His prayer penetrated through [the] darkness around him and reached the highest heavens. The heavens were opened and a dove, in appearance like burnished gold, [descended upon Him,] and from the lips of the Infinite One was heard these words, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” [Matthew 3:16, 17.] We have not understood how much this was saying to us. “You are accepted in the Beloved.” [See Ephesians 1:6.] His prayer ascended to the highest heavens. There [our] petitions will be heard. Jesus Christ, [our] Intercessor, will give [ear] to the [petitioner], and he will have grace [and] power through the Substitute, and surety that his petitions shall be honored in the highest heavens. Christ laid aside His crown and royal robe, stepped down from His high command, clothed His divinity with humanity, and for our sake became poor, that we through His poverty might inherit the heavenly treasure. He placed Himself at the head of humanity. If we walk in His footsteps, we are accepted by God. By Christ’s sacrifice we are “accepted in the Beloved.” [Ephesians 1:6.] As the prayers of Christ ascended to His Father, notwithstanding the dark shadow of the powers of darkness through which they passed, so will our prayers cleave through the hellish shadow of Satan and enter the sanctuary above. The same glory which flashed from the threshold of heaven at the time of Christ’s baptism is revealed to every earnest seeker of Christ.

It is now the day of His salvation. The light from the cross of Calvary is now shining forth in clear, bright rays, revealing Jesus, our Sacrifice for sin. As you read the promises which I have set before you, remember they are the expression of unutterable love and pity. The great heart of infinite Love is drawn toward the sinner with boundless compassion. “We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” Ephesians 1:7. Yes, only believe that God is your helper. He wants to restore His moral image in man. As you draw nigh to Him with confession and repentance, He will draw nigh to you with mercy and forgiveness. The salvation of one soul reveals the depths of a Saviour’s matchless love. If all church members who have known the truth would accept this salvation, they would bear the testimony, “We have redemption through his blood. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made us free from the law of sin and death. We are more than conquerors through him that loved us and gave himself for us. Believing in him, we rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.” [See Ephesians 1:7; Romans 8:2-4, 37; Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 1:8.]

Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; and to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: to the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, according to the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Ephesians 3:5-11.

Chapter 4—The Plan of Redemption

PP 67.1

Not only man but the earth had by sin come under the power of the wicked one, and was to be restored by the plan of redemption. At his creation Adam was placed in dominion over the earth. But by yielding to temptation, he was brought under the power of Satan. “Of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.” 2 Peter 2:19. When man became Satan’s captive, the dominion which he held, passed to his conqueror. Thus Satan became “the god of this world.” 2 Corinthians 4:4. He had usurped that dominion over the earth which had been originally given to Adam. But Christ, by His sacrifice paying the penalty of sin, would not only redeem man, but recover the dominion which he had forfeited. All that was lost by the first Adam will be restored by the second. Says the prophet, “O tower of the flock, the stronghold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion.” Micah 4:8. And the apostle Paul points forward to the “redemption of the purchased possession.” Ephesians 1:14. God created the earth to be the abode of holy, happy beings. The Lord “formed the earth and made it; He hath established it, He created it not in vain, He formed it to be inhabited.” Isaiah 45:18. That purpose will be fulfilled, when, renewed by the power of God, and freed from sin and sorrow, it shall become the eternal abode of the redeemed. “The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein forever.” “And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and His servants shall serve Him.” Psalm 37:29; Revelation 22:3.

Chapter 58—The Coming of a Deliverer

Satan, by means of his success in turning man aside from the path of obedience, became “the god of this world.” 2 Corinthians 4:4. The dominion that once was Adam’s passed to the usurper. But the Son of God proposed to come to this earth to pay the penalty of sin, and thus not only redeem man, but recover the dominion forfeited. It is of this restoration that Micah prophesied when he said, “O Tower of the flock, the stronghold of the daughter of Zion, unto Thee shall it come, even the first dominion.” Micah 4:8. The apostle Paul has referred to it as “the redemption of the purchased possession.” Ephesians 1:14. And the psalmist had in mind the same final restoration of man’s original inheritance when he declared, “The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein forever.” Psalm 37:29.

Meat in Due Season—My brethren in responsible positions, may the Lord not only anoint your eyes that they may see, but pour into your hearts the holy oil that from the two olive branches flows through the golden pipes into the golden bowl which feeds the lamps of the sanctuary. May He “give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him; the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling,... and what is the exceeding greatness of His power to usward who believe.” Ephesians 1:17-19.

The apostle Paul makes supplication to God, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.” [Ephesians 1:17-19.] But the mind must first be made adaptable to the nature of the truth to be investigated. The eyes of the understanding must be enlightened, and heart and mind brought into harmony with God, who is truth. He who beholds Jesus with the eye of faith sees no glory in himself, for the glory of the Redeemer is reflected into the mind and heart. The atonement of His blood is realized, and taking away of sin stirs his heart with gratitude. Being justified by Christ, the receiver of truth is constrained to make an entire surrender to God, and is admitted into the school of Christ, that he may learn of him who is meek and lowly of heart. A knowledge of the love of God is shed abroad in his heart. He exclaims, O, what love! What condescension! Grasping the rich promises of faith he becomes a partaker of the divine nature. His heart being emptied of self the waters of life flow in, the glory of the Lord shines forth. Perpetually looking unto Jesus, the human is assimilated by the divine. The believer is changed into His likeness.

Brethren and sisters, you are united in a most solemn, sacred work. Souls for whom Christ had died, souls who may have that life that measures with the life of God, are in the valley of decision. Now is the most critical time. Before you present any subject to the people, first talk with God in prayer. Hide self in Jesus. Receive the Holy Spirit from God, and then in the power of the Holy Spirit speak to the people. Be sure that you are in the place where you can be worked by the Holy Spirit, “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power.” [Ephesians 1:17-19.]

What Matchless Love! August 1

All the paternal love which has come down from generation to generation through the channel of human hearts, all the springs of tenderness which have opened the souls of men, are but as a tiny rill to the boundless ocean when compared with the infinite, exhaustless love of God. Tongue cannot utter it; pen cannot portray it. You may meditate upon it every day of your life; you may search the Scriptures diligently in order to understand it; you may summon every power and capability that God has given you, in the endeavor to comprehend the love and compassion of the heavenly Father; and yet there is an infinity beyond. You may study that love for ages; yet you can never fully comprehend the length and breadth, the depth and the height, of the love of God in giving His Son to die for the world. Eternity itself can never fully reveal it. Yet as we study the Bible and meditate upon the life of Christ and the plan of redemption, these great themes will open to our understanding more and more. And it will be ours to realize the blessing which Paul desired for the Ephesian church when he prayed “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe” (Ephesians 1:17-19) (Testimonies for the Church 5:739, 740).

The Great Controversy

Introduction

GC ix.1

For the believers at Ephesus the apostle prayed, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and ... what is the exceeding greatness of His power to usward who believe.” Ephesians 1:17-19. The ministry of the divine Spirit in enlightening the understanding and opening to the mind the deep things of God’s holy word, was the blessing which Paul thus besought for the Ephesian church.

When a minister is appointed to a certain work, he is not to consider that he must ask the president of the conference how many days he shall labor in a certain locality, but he must seek wisdom from One who has appointed him his work, One who promised to give wisdom and unerring judgment, who giveth liberally and upbraideth not. He must carefully consider every part of the vineyard apportioned to him, and discern by the grace given what he shall do, and what he shall not do. Circumstances will arise, which, if carefully studied, with humility and faith, seeking wisdom of God, will make you a wise and successful laborer. “The God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.” Ephesians 1:17, 18. The prayer of Paul was for the Ephesians that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, might give unto them the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to usward who believe? “According to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in heavenly places.” [Verses 17, 19, 20.] “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sin, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” [Ephesians 2:4-6.]

The privileges, the blessings, of the child of God are represented by the apostle in the following language: “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” [Colossians 1:27.] When we realize that our hope of glory is Christ, that we are complete in Him, we shall rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory. The apostle further says that he ceased not to pray, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in heavenly places.” [Ephesians 1:17-20.]

We want you to sense these things. We want you to understand the working of the Spirit of God. Ephesians 1:17-23. Let us put our mental powers to the strain. Christ came to this world to establish Himself as the Center. Luke 11:31. We can say as Christ said to Nicodemus, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” [John 3:3.] We want you to see what Christ is and what God is. We believe [we] have the most wonderful truths that men ever knew, and yet many allow a dish of fables to be the man of their counsel.

The whole universe is under the control of the Prince of life. Fallen man is subject to Him. He paid the ransom money for the whole world. All may be saved through Him. He calls upon us to obey, believe, receive, and live. He would gather together a church embracing the whole human family, if all would leave the black banner of rebellion and place themselves under His banner. Those who believe on Him, He will present to God as loyal subjects. He is our Mediator, as well as our Redeemer. He will defend His chosen followers against Satan’s power, and will subdue all their enemies. Through Him, they will be conquerors and more than conquerors. Writing to the Ephesians, Paul says, “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to usward, who believe according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought in Christ when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in heavenly places.” [Ephesians 1:18-20.]

Chapter 11—Answered Prayer

Pr 112.1

The nobleman wanted to see the fulfillment of his prayer before he should believe; but he had to accept the word of Jesus that his request was heard and the blessing granted. This lesson we also have to learn. Not because we see or feel that God hears us are we to believe. We are to trust in His promises. When we come to Him in faith, every petition enters the heart of God. When we have asked for His blessing, we should believe that we receive it, and thank Him that we have received it. Then we are to go about our duties, assured that the blessing will be realized when we need it most. When we have learned to do this, we shall know that our prayers are answered. God will do for us “exceeding abundantly”, “according to the riches of His glory,” and “the working of His mighty power.” Ephesians 3:20, 16; Ephesians 1:19.—(The Desire of Ages, 200.)
