Context of Acts 17:7
5Then the Jews became jealous. They took some low-class characters who hung around the public square, formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. They attacked Jason’s home and searched it for Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd. 6When they didn’t find Paul and Silas, they dragged Jason and some other believers in front of the city officials. They shouted, “Those men who have made trouble all over the world are now here in Thessalonica, and Jason has welcomed them as his guests. All of them oppose the emperor’s decrees by saying that there is another king, whose name is Jesus.” 8The crowd and the officials were upset when they heard this. 9But after they had made Jason and the others post bond, they let them go.

Commentaries on Acts 17:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7These all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar - Persecutors always strive to affect the lives of the objects of their hatred, by accusing them of sedition, or plots against the state. That there is another king, one Jesus - How malevolent was this saying! The apostles proclaimed Jesus as king - that is true; but never once insinuated that his kingdom was of this world. The reverse they always maintained.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Whom Jason hath received - Has received into his house, and entertained kindly. These all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar - The charge against them was that of sedition and rebellion against the Roman emperor. Grotius on this verse remarks that the Roman people, and after them the emperors, would not permit the name of king to be mentioned in any of the vanquished provinces except by their permission. Saying that there is another king - This was…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5-7Once again, the opponents of the Christian faith regarded it as a disruption and a threat (compare 16:19–21).
