Context of 2 John 1:10
8Be careful that you don’t destroy what we’ve worked for, but that you receive your full reward. 9Everyone who doesn’t continue to teach what Christ taught doesn’t have God. The person who continues to teach what Christ taught has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and doesn’t bring these teachings, don’t take him into your home or even greet him. 11Whoever greets him shares the evil things he’s doing. 12I have a lot to write to you. I would prefer not to write a letter. Instead, I hope to visit and talk things over with you personally. Then we will be completely filled with joy.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10If there come any unto you - Any professed teacher of religion. And bring not this doctrine - This doctrine which Christ taught, or the true doctrine respecting him and his religion. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 7-11Verses 7-11 The deceiver and his deceit are described: he brings some error concerning the person or office of the Lord Jesus. Such a one is a deceiver and an antichrist; he deludes souls, and undermines the glory and kingdom of the Lord Christ. Let us not think it strange, that there are deceivers and opposers of the Lord Christ's name and dignity now, for there were such, even in the apostles' times. The more deceivers and deceits abound, the more…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-11Christians should not invite any person who does not teach the truth about Christ into their homes. In the early church, Christians met for worship in homes (see Acts 2:46; 5:42; 8:3; 12:5, 12; Colossians 4:15; Philemon 1:2). Because of this, John may be referring to inviting false teachers into a meeting of the church. This instruction may also refer to giving any type of hospitality to false teachers. Showing hospitality would support their work and…Read the comment
