Context of Hebrews 9:22
20saying, "This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you." 21And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. 23Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22And almost all things are - purged with blood - The apostle says almost, because in some cases certain vessels were purified by water, some by fire, Numbers 31:23, and some with the ashes of the red heifer, Numbers 19:2-10, but it was always understood that every thing was at first consecrated by the blood of the victim. And without shedding of blood is no remission - The apostle shows fully here what is one of his great objects in the whole of this…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22And almost all things - It is a general custom to purify everything by blood. This rule was not universal, for some things were purified by fire and water, Numbers 31:22-23, and some by water only; Numbers 31:24; Leviticus 16:26, Leviticus 16:28. But the exceptions to the general rule were few. Almost everything in the tabernacle and temple service, was consecrated or purified by blood. And without shedding of blood is no remission - Remission or…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 15-22Verses 15-22 The solemn transactions between God and man, are sometimes called a covenant, here a testament, which is a willing deed of a person, bestowing legacies on such persons as are described, and it only takes effect upon his death. Thus Christ died, not only to obtain the blessings of salvation for us, but to give power to the disposal of them. All, by sin, were become guilty before God, had forfeited every thing that is good; but God, willing to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 22In the law of Moses, many cleansing rituals required the death of a sacrificial animal. Blood was used in these cleansing rituals (see Exodus 29:12; 30:10; Leviticus 4:6, 17; 16:14–19; Numbers 19:4) and for making atonement (see Leviticus 16). The shedding of Christ’s blood created the new covenant, offering lasting purification and complete forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 8:12; 10:15–18; Matthew 26:28; Ephesians 1:7).Read the comment
