Context of Titus 2:14

12Because God is kind, he teaches us to stop living in a bad way. We no longer do the bad things that do not make God happy. We turn away from the bad things that belong to this world. God teaches us to control ourselves wisely while we live in this world. He teaches us to do what is right. He teaches us to please him in the way that we live. 13Remember this: We are waiting for Jesus Christ to return to this world. When he comes, that will make us very happy. Everyone will see how great Jesus Christ is. He is our great God. He is the one who saves us from our sins. He gave himself as a sacrifice on our behalf. He did that to make us free from every kind of bad thing. As a result, we can be completely good and clean inside ourselves. We can become his own special people, who want to do good things. 15You must teach these things to the believers. Help them to live in a good way. Warn them when they do wrong things. Use all the authority that you have as a leader in the church. Make sure that everyone respects you properly.

Commentaries on Titus 2:14

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Who gave himself for us - Who gave his own life as a ransom price to redeem ours. This is evidently what is meant, as the words and imply. The verb signifies to redeem or ransom by paying a price, as I have often had occasion to observe; and signifies such a peculiar property as a man has in what he has purchased with his own money. Jesus gave his life for the world, and thus has purchased men unto himself; and, having purchased the slaves from their…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14Who gave himself for us - See the notes at Ephesians 5:2. That he might redeem us from all iniquity - The word here rendered “redeem” - ́ lutroōoccurs only here and in Luke 24:21; 1 Peter 1:18. The noun, however - ́ lutronoccurs in Matthew 20:28; and Mark 10:45; where it is rendered “ransom;” see it explained in the notes at Matthew 20:28. It is here said that the object of his giving himself was to save his people from all iniquity; see this explained…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-15Verses 11-15 The doctrine of grace and salvation by the gospel, is for all ranks and conditions of men. It teaches to forsake sin; to have no more to do with it. An earthly, sensual conversation suits not a heavenly calling. It teaches to make conscience of that which is good. We must look to God in Christ, as the object of our hope and worship. A gospel conversation must be a godly conversation. See our duty in a very few words; denying ungodliness and…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14Salvation produces a people who have the desire for and ability to do the good deeds described in 2:2–10. He gave Himself: See also 1 Timothy 2:6. to redeem us: See Galatians 3:22; 4:4–5; compare Exodus 6:6–8. The phrase "a people for His own possession" recalls the formation of Israel as a nation (see Exodus 19:5; Deuteronomy 7:6; 14:2). Those who follow Christ are now God’s people—his nation—and the Spirit leads them to keep God’s covenant. totally…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. gave himself--"The forcible 'Himself, His whole self, the greatest gift ever given,' must not be overlooked." for us--Greek, "in our behalf." redeem us--deliver us from bondage by paying the price of His precious blood. An appropriate image in addressing bond-servants (Tit 2:9, 10): from all iniquity--the essence of sin, namely, "transgression of the law": in bondage to which we were till then. The aim of His redemption was to redeem us, not merely…Read the comment
