Context of Romans 9:28
26‘God had said to them, “You are not my people.” In the same place where he said that, people will now call them “Children of God, who lives for ever.” ’ 27Also, Isaiah, God's prophet, said this about Israel's people: ‘There are so many of Israel's people, nobody can count them. They are as many as the bits of sand on the shore of the sea. But God will save only a few of them. The Lord God will finish his work quickly. He has warned his people what he will do. And he will punish them completely.’ 29Isaiah had already said this: ‘The Lord of great power has let some of our children live. If he had not done that, no descendants would remain. We would have become like the people in Sodom and Gomorrah.’ 30So, we must think about what all this means. The Gentiles were not trying to become right with God. But some of them have now become right with him. God has accepted them as right, because they have believed in Jesus Christ.

Commentaries on Romans 9:28
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28For he will finish the work, and cut it short, etc. - These appear to be forensic terms, and refer to the conclusion of a judicial proceeding; the Lord has tried and found them guilty, and will immediately execute upon them the punishment due to their transgressions.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-29Verses 25-29 The rejecting of the Jews, and the taking in the Gentiles, were foretold in the Old Testament. It tends very much to the clearing of a truth, to observe how the Scripture is fulfilled in it. It is a wonder of Divine power and mercy that there are any saved: for even those left to be a seed, if God had dealt with them according to their sins, had perished with the rest. This great truth this Scripture teaches us. Even among the vast number of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27-28only the remnant will be saved: So many Israelites turned away from God that the Old Testament prophets spoke of a faithful group within the larger nation of Israel. This smaller group is often called a remnant (see Isaiah 11:10–16). The remnant refers to those who remained loyal to God and trusted him. They would receive salvation. The rest of the people faced judgment because they continued to reject God.Read the comment

For I will finish and shorten the matter, etc. (Sermonem enim consummans et abbrevians,” etc.; Λόγον γὰρ, etc. It is literally the Septuagint except in two instances: Paul puts in γὰρ, and substitutes ἐπὶ τὢς γὢς for ἐν τὣ οἰκουμένὟ ὅλὟ. It is a difficult passage in Hebrew: but the following rendering will make it materially consistent with the words of the Apostle, who evidently did not intend to give the words literally. A destruction, soon…Read the comment
