Context of Romans 9:28
26“And it shall be that in the place where it was said to them, ‘you are not My people,’ There they shall be called sons of the living God.” 27And Isaiah calls out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the sons of Israel be like the sand of the sea, it is only the remnant [a small believing minority] that will be saved [from God’s judgment]; For the Lord will execute His word upon the earth [He will conclude His dealings with mankind] completely and without delay.” 29It is as Isaiah foretold, “If the Lord of Hosts had not left us seed [future generations from which a believing remnant of Israelites came], We would have become like Sodom, and would have resembled Gomorrah [totally rejected and destroyed]!” 30What shall we say then? Commentaries on Romans 9:28
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28For he will finish the work, and cut it short, etc. - These appear to be forensic terms, and refer to the conclusion of a judicial proceeding; the Lord has tried and found them guilty, and will immediately execute upon them the punishment due to their transgressions.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-29Verses 25-29 The rejecting of the Jews, and the taking in the Gentiles, were foretold in the Old Testament. It tends very much to the clearing of a truth, to observe how the Scripture is fulfilled in it. It is a wonder of Divine power and mercy that there are any saved: for even those left to be a seed, if God had dealt with them according to their sins, had perished with the rest. This great truth this Scripture teaches us. Even among the vast number of…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 27-28only the remnant will be saved: So many Israelites turned away from God that the Old Testament prophets spoke of a faithful group within the larger nation of Israel. This smaller group is often called a remnant (see Isaiah 11:10–16). The remnant refers to those who remained loyal to God and trusted him. They would receive salvation. The rest of the people faced judgment because they continued to reject God.Read the comment

- Calvin’s Commentaries · v. 2828. For I will finish and shorten the matter, etc. (Sermonem enim consummans et abbrevians,” etc.; Λόγον γὰρ, etc. It is literally the Septuagint except in two instances: Paul puts in γὰρ, and substitutes ἐπὶ τὢς γὢς for ἐν τὣ οἰκουμένὟ ὅλὟ. It is a difficult passage in Hebrew: but the following rendering will make it materially consistent with the words of the Apostle, who evidently did not intend to give the words literally. A destruction, soon…Read the comment
