Context of Romans 15:12
10It says also in the Bible: ‘Be very happy, you Gentiles! Praise God together with his people.’ 11It also says this: ‘Say how great the Lord is, all you Gentiles. All people, from every country, should say how great he is.’ God's prophet Isaiah says this: ‘The root of Jesse will arrive. He will come to rule the Gentiles. The Gentiles will trust him to save them.’ 13God is the one who causes us to hope for good things. I pray that God will bless you very much. I pray that he will cause you to be happy and to have peace in your minds. He will do this because you believe in him. As a result, God's Holy Spirit will make you strong with his power, so that you hope even more certainly. 14My Christian friends, I myself am completely sure that you are always good. You know everything about God's message, so that you are able to teach one another what is right.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12Esaias saith - Isaiah 11:1, Isaiah 11:10. There shall be a root - A descendant, or one that should proceed from him when he was dead. When a tree dies, and falls, there may remain a “root” which shall retain life, and which shall send up a sprout of a similar kind. So Job says Job 14:7, “For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.” So in relation to Jesse. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-13Verses 8-13 Christ fulfilled the prophecies and promises relating to the Jews, and the Gentile converts could have no excuse for despising them. The Gentiles, being brought into the church, are companions in patience and tribulation. They should praise God. And the whole plan of redemption is suited to reconcile…Read the comment
