Context of Matthew 8:24
22Jesus said to him, ‘No! You must come with me now. Let those people who are dead themselves bury their own dead people.’ 23Then Jesus got into a boat. His disciples also went with him. Immediately a great storm began to blow across the lake. Water began to go into the boat and fill it. Jesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went to him and they woke him. ‘Master, save us!’ they said. ‘We will die here in the water!’ 26Jesus said to them, ‘You should not be so afraid. You should trust me more than you do!’ Then he stood up and he spoke strongly to the wind and the water. ‘Stop!’ he said. Then the wind and the water became quiet again.

Commentaries on Matthew 8:24
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24Arose a great tempest in the sea - Probably excited by Satan, the prince of the power of the air, who, having got the author and all the preachers of the Gospel together in a small vessel, thought by drowning it, to defeat the purposes of God, and thus to prevent the salvation of a ruined world. What a noble opportunity must this have appeared to the enemy of the human race!Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24A great tempest - A violent storm; or a “wind” so strong as to endanger their lives. This lake was subject to sudden squalls. Dr. Thomson (“The Land and the Book,” vol. ii. p. 59) says: “Small as the lake is, and placid, in general, as a molten mirror, I have repeatedly seen it quiver, and leap, and boil like a caldron, when driven by fierce winds from the eastern mountains.” The ship was covered with the waves - The billows dashed against the ship Mark…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-27Verses 23-27 It is a comfort to those who go down to the sea in ships, and are often in perils there, to reflect that they have a Saviour to trust in and pray to, who knows what it is to be on the water, and to be in storms there. Those who are passing with Christ over the ocean of this world, must expect storms. His human nature, like to ours in every thing but sin, was wearied, and he slept at this time to try the faith of his disciples. They, in their…Read the comment
