Context of Matthew 8:23
21Another man who was one of Jesus' disciples said to him, ‘Sir, I want to come with you. But first, let me go home and bury my father. Then I will come with you.’ 22Jesus said to him, ‘No! You must come with me now. Let those people who are dead themselves bury their own dead people.’ Then Jesus got into a boat. His disciples also went with him. 24Immediately a great storm began to blow across the lake. Water began to go into the boat and fill it. Jesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went to him and they woke him. ‘Master, save us!’ they said. ‘We will die here in the water!’

There were many other ships in company with him, Mark 4:36. This circumstance would render the miracle much more striking and impressive.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-27Verses 23-27 It is a comfort to those who go down to the sea in ships, and are often in perils there, to reflect that they have a Saviour to trust in and pray to, who knows what it is to be on the water, and to be in storms there. Those who are passing with Christ over the ocean of this world, must expect storms. His human nature, like to ours in every thing but sin, was wearied, and he slept at this time to try the faith of his disciples. They, in their…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-27This story continues the theme of true discipleship. In the storm, the disciples had to trust Jesus with their very lives for safety and rescue. Jesus showed that he even has authority over dangerous weather and the sea (see Job 38:8–11; Psalms 29; 65:1–13; 89:9; 107:23–32).Read the comment
