Context of John 11:5
3So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus to say, ‘Lord, the friend that you love is ill.’ 4Jesus heard the message. Then he said, ‘This illness will not finish with Lazarus's death. No, its purpose is to show how great God is. Because of this, people will see how great God's Son is.’ Jesus loved Martha and her sister, and their brother Lazarus, too. 6He heard the news that Lazarus was ill. But then he stayed in the place where he was for two more days. 7After that, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘We should return to Judea.’

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus - Therefore his staying two days longer in Bethabara was not through lack of affection for this distressed family, but merely that he might have a more favorable opportunity of proving to them how much he loved them. God's delays, in answering prayers offered to him by persons in distress, are often proofs of his purpose to confer some…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-57The resurrection of Lazarus points to the future death and resurrection of Jesus. The description of Lazarus’s tomb is similar to the description of the tomb Jesus was placed in after he died (11:38, 44; 20:1, 7). Both accounts mention a cave and burial cloths. These details connect the two events and help us see that Lazarus’s story is a sign. Soon after Lazarus was raised, a woman anointed Jesus for burial (12:3). This act prepared him for his coming…Read the comment
