Context of Matthew 4:13
11Then the Devil left Jesus alone. Immediately angels came to Jesus and they took care of him. 12Then Jesus heard that Herod had put John the Baptist in prison. So Jesus returned to Galilee. But he did not stay in Nazareth. He went to live in Capernaum, which is a town on the shore of Lake Galilee. It was in the part of Israel called Zebulun and Naphtali. 14This caused God's message to become true. Long ago God had said through his prophet Isaiah: 15‘I am speaking to you people who live in Zebulun and Naphtali. Your part of this country is on the way to Lake Galilee. It is across the Jordan River in the part of the country called Galilee. Some people who are not Jews live there.

Commentaries on Matthew 4:13
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13And leaving Nazareth - Or, entirely leaving Nazareth, , from , intensive, and , I leave. It seems that, from this time, our blessed Lord made Capernaum his ordinary place of residence; and utterly forsook Nazareth, because they had wholly rejected his word, and even attempted to take away his life. See Luke 4:29. Galilee was bounded by mount Lebanon on the north, by the river Jordan and the sea of Galilee on the east, by Chison on the south, and by the…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-17Verses 12-17 It is just with God to take the gospel and the means of grace, from those that slight them and thrust them away. Christ will not stay long where he is not welcome. Those who are without Christ, are in the dark. They were sitting in this condition, a contented posture; they chose it rather than light; they were willingly ignorant. When the gospel comes, light comes; when it comes to any place, when it comes to any soul, it makes day there…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13Capernaum was in Galilee, a region that the religious leaders in Judea and Jerusalem viewed negatively (see John 1:46; 7:41–42, 52). Many people from Judea thought Galileans to be unrefined and poorly spoken (compare Matt 26:73). The leaders believed these people could make their teachings less accurate. Galilee also had more non-Jewish people than Judea.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1313. And leaving Nazareth--The prevalent opinion is that this refers to a first visit to Nazareth after His baptism, whose details are given by Luke (Lu 4:16, &c.); a second visit being that detailed by our Evangelist (Mt 13:54-58), and by Mark (Mr 6:1-6). But to us there seem all but insuperable difficulties in the supposition of two visits to Nazareth after His baptism; and on the grounds stated in Lu 4:16, &c., we think that the one only visit to…Read the comment
