Context of Matthew 27:48
46At about three o'clock in the afternoon, Jesus shouted loudly, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ That means, ‘My God, my God, why have you left me alone?’ 47Some people who were standing there heard him. They said to each other, ‘He is shouting to Elijah.’ One of these people ran quickly and he brought a piece of cloth. He poured cheap wine on it, and he put it on the end of a stick. He lifted it up to Jesus so that he could drink the wine from it. 49The other people said, ‘Wait! Now we will see if Elijah comes to save him.’ 50Then Jesus shouted again with a loud voice, and after that he died.

Commentaries on Matthew 27:48
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 48Took a sponge - This being the most convenient way to reach a liquid to his mouth; tied it on a reed, that they might be able to reach his lips with it. This reed, as we learn from St. John, was a stalk of hyssop, which, in that country, must have grown to a considerable magnitude. This appears also to have been done in mercy, to alleviate his sufferings. See Matthew 27:34.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 48One of them ran - John John 19:28 says that this was in consequence of Jesus‘ saying “I thirst.” One of the effects of crucifixion was excessive thirst. Took a sponge - A sponge is a well-known porous substance that easily absorbs water. It was used in this case because, Jesus being elevated, it was difficult to convey a cup to his lips. Filled it with vinegar - This was the common drink of Roman soldiers. It was a light wine, turned sour and mixed with…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 45-50Verses 45-50 During the three hours which the darkness continued, Jesus was in agony, wrestling with the powers of darkness, and suffering his Father's displeasure against the sin of man, for which he was now making his soul an offering. Never were there three such hours since the day God created man upon the earth, never such a dark and awful scene; it was the turning point of that great affair, man's redemption and salvation. Jesus uttered a complaint…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 48The sour wine was vinegar. The drink was probably meant to mock Jesus by pretending to ease his thirst (compare Psalm 69:21 with Matthew 27:34). Although some scholars think they offered it as a genuine act of kindness.Read the comment
