Context of Mark 11:14
12On the next day, they left Bethany. Jesus was hungry. 13He saw a fig tree which was a long way away. There were leaves on it. So he went to see if it had fruit on it. When he reached it, he found nothing except leaves. That was because it was not the right season for it to have fruit. So Jesus said to the tree, ‘Nobody will ever eat your fruit again.’ And his disciples heard what he said. 15When they arrived back in Jerusalem, Jesus went into the yard of the temple. People were buying and selling things there. Jesus began to make them all leave that place. Some men were changing coins there for people. He pushed over their tables. And he pushed over the seats of the men who sold birds. 16Jesus would not let anyone carry things through that place.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 11-26Verses 11-26 See this passage explained in the notes at Matthew 21:18-22. Mark 11:11 Into the temple - Not into the edifice properly called “the temple,” but into the “courts” which surrounded the principal edifice. Our Saviour, not being of the tribe of Levi, was not permitted to enter into the holy or most holy place; and when, therefore, it is said that he went into the “temple,” it is always to be understood of the “courts” surrounding the temple. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 12-18Verses 12-18 Christ looked to find some fruit, for the time of gathering figs, though it was near, was not yet come; but he found none. He made this fig-tree an example, not to the trees, but to the men of that generation. It was a figure of the doom upon the Jewish church, to which he came seeking fruit, but found none. Christ went to the temple, and began to reform the abuses in its courts, to show that when the Redeemer came to Zion, it was to turn…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13-14since it was not the season for figs: Jesus did not curse the fig tree simply because it had no fruit. Instead, he was performing a prophetic sign act, like the actions of earlier prophets (Isaiah 20; Jeremiah 13:1–11; 19:1–13; Ezekiel 4). A prophetic sign act is an action that teaches or announces God’s message. Just as Jesus judged the fruitless fig tree, he also judged the temple and Israel’s worship, where he found no spiritual fruit. This judgment…Read the comment

This is introduced as a connecting link, to explain what was afterwards to be said on the subject, as the narrative has to proceed to the other transactions of this day.
