Context of Mark 1:5
3His voice will shout in the wilderness: “The Lord will come soon, so prepare a way for him. Make the paths straight for him.” ’ 4So John went to a place in the wilderness. He baptized people and he spoke a message from God. He said to people, ‘You have done many wrong things. You must turn away from them and change how you live. Then God will forgive you and I will baptize you.’ Many people who lived in Jerusalem and in the country of Judea went to listen to John. The people told God about all the wrong things that they had done. Then John baptized them in the Jordan River. 6John wore clothes made from the hair of a camel. He also wore a belt made from leather. His usual food was locusts and honey from the wilderness. 7John said to the people, ‘Another person will come soon. He is much greater than I am. I am not good enough even to undo his shoes for him.

Confessing their sins - It was an invariable custom among the Jews to admit no proselyte to baptism, till he had, in the most solemn manner, declared that he forever had renounced all idolatrous worship, all heathenish superstitions, and promised an entire and unreserved submission to the law of Moses. This was necessary for a proselyte adult - a child dedicated to God by baptism must be brought up in this…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5All of … Judea: John the Baptist attracted a lot of attention. Many people believed that there had been no prophet for over 400 years. So, prophets were associated with Israel's past and the future reign of the Messiah. John preached repentance (turning away from sin and returning to God), like the ancient prophets. He also dressed like the great prophet Elijah (1:6), whom God promised would return in the last days (Malachi 4:5).Read the comment
