Context of Psalms 32:5
3When I said nothing to God about my sin, my whole body became weak. I cried all the time because of the pain. 4In the day and in the night, you punished me very much. It seemed as if the hot sun was taking away my strength. Selah. Then I told you about my sins. I did not try to hide the bad things that I had done. I said, ‘I will tell the Lord about the things that I have done against him.’ When I did that, you forgave my sins. Selah. 6Because of this, all your own people should pray to you. They should pray while they still have the chance. Then, when danger comes to them like a river of deep water, they will still be safe. 7Yes, Lord, you are a place where I can hide. You will keep me safe from trouble. I will hear happy songs all around me, because you save your people from danger. Selah.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5I acknowledged my sin - When this confession was made thoroughly and sincerely, and I ceased to cover and extenuate my offense, then thou didst forgive the iniquity of my sin. I felt the hardness of heart: I felt the deep distress of soul; I felt power to confess and abhor my sin; I felt confidence in the mercy of the Lord; and I felt the forgiveness of the iniquity of my sin. Selah - This is all true; I know it; I felt it; I feel it.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5I acknowledged my sin unto thee - That is, then I confessed my guilt. I had borne the dreadful pressure as long as I could. I had endeavored to conceal and suppress my conviction, but I found no relief. The anguish became deeper and deeper; my strength was failing; I was crushed under the intolerable burden, and when I could no longer bear it I went and made humble confession, and found relief. The verb used here is in the future tense, “I will…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 3-7Verses 3-7 It is very difficult to bring sinful man humbly to accept free mercy, with a full confession of his sins and self-condemnation. But the true and only way to peace of conscience, is, to confess our sins, that they may be forgiven; to declare them that we may be justified. Although repentance and confession do not merit the pardon of transgression, they are needful to the real enjoyment of forgiving mercy. And what tongue can tell the happiness…Read the comment
