Context of Luke 24:51
49Now listen! I will send to you the gift that God my Father has promised to give to you. You must stay here in the city until this happens. Then the power of God will come from heaven and it will cover you.’ 50Then Jesus led the group of his disciples out of the city. They all went to a place near the village called Bethany. He held up his hands towards them all. He asked God to be good to them. While he was praying for them like that, he went up away from them. God lifted him up to heaven. 52The disciples praised Jesus for his great power. Then they returned to Jerusalem and they were all very happy. 53All the time they were in the temple and they were praising God.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 51Carried up into heaven - - into that heaven from which he had descended, John 1:18; John 3:13. This was forty days after his resurrection, Acts 1:3, during which time he had given the most convincing proofs of that resurrection, not only to the apostles, but to many others - to upwards of five hundred at one time, 1 Corinthians 15:6. As in his life they had seen the way to the kingdom, and in his death the price of the kingdom, so in his ascension they…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 50-53Verses 50-53 Christ ascended from Bethany, near the Mount of Olives. There was the garden in which his sufferings began; there he was in his agony. Those that would go to heaven, must ascend thither from the house of sufferings and sorrows. The disciples did not see him rise out of the grave; his resurrection could be proved by their seeing him alive afterwards: but they saw him ascend into heaven; they could not otherwise have a proof of his ascension…Read the comment
