Context of Luke 23:4
2Then they all started to tell Pilate that Jesus had done bad things. They said, ‘We found this man when he was telling our people wrong things. He said that we must not pay taxes to the Roman government. He also said that he himself is the Messiah, that is, a king.’ 3Pilate asked Jesus, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ Jesus replied, ‘You have said it.’ Pilate then said to the leaders of the priests and to all the crowd of people, ‘I cannot find any reason to say that this man is guilty.’ 5But they continued to speak strongly to him. They said, ‘He makes the people angry and ready to fight against the government. He has taught these bad things everywhere in Judea. He started in Galilee and now he has come to Jerusalem.’ 6When Pilate heard this, he asked if Jesus came from Galilee.

Commentaries on Luke 23:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4I find no fault in this man - According to John 18:36, John 18:38, Pilate did not say this till after our Lord had declared to him that his kingdom was not of this world; and probably not till after he had found, on examining witnesses, ( Luke 23:14;), that all their evidence amounted to no proof, of his having set up himself for a temporal king. See Bishop Pearce.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4I find no fault - I see no evidence that he is guilty of what you charge him with. This was after Pilate had taken Jesus into the judgment-hall by himself and examined him “privately,” and had been satisfied in regard to the nature of his kingdom. See John 18:33-38. He was “then” satisfied that though he claimed to be “a king,” yet his kingdom was not of this world, and that “his” claims did not interfere with those of Caesar.Read the comment
