Context of Luke 15:24
22But the father shouted to his servants. “Hurry!” he said. “Fetch the most beautiful coat that we have. Put it on him and also put a ring on his finger. Put shoes on his feet. 23Fetch the young cow that we keep ready to eat on a special day. It is already fat. Kill it and prepare it. We will eat a big meal and we will be happy together. I thought that my son here was dead. But now he has returned to me and he is alive! I thought that he had left me for all time. But now he has come home.” Then they all began to be happy together. 25While these things were happening, the older son was working in the field. On his way back to the house, he heard music. People were dancing. 26So he asked one of the servants, “What is happening?”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 24Was dead - This is capable of two significations: 1.“I supposed” that he was dead, but I know now that he is alive. 2.He was “dead to virtue” - he was sunk in pleasure and vice. The word is not unfrequently thus used. See 1 Timothy 5:6; Matthew 8:22; Romans 6:13. Hence, to be restored to “virtue” is said to be restored again to life, Romans 6:13; Revelation 3:1; Ephesians 2:1. It is probable that this latter is the meaning here. See Luke 15:32. Thus the convinced sinner perceives that the meanest servant of God is happier than he is. To look unto God as a…Read the comment
