Context of Ephesians 2:1
Remember how you lived before. You did wrong things and bad things. As a result, you were dead in your spirits. 2You lived in a bad way, like the people who belong to this world. You were obeying Satan, who rules the powerful spirits in the air. Those spirits are working now in everyone who refuses to obey God. 3At one time, all of us lived like those people. We did whatever bad things our bodies wanted to do. If our thoughts made us want to do something, we did it. Because we were like that, God was angry with us. He should have punished us, just like everyone else.

Commentaries on Ephesians 2:1
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1And you hath he quickened - This chapter should not have been separated from the preceding, with which it is most intimately connected. As Christ fills the whole body of Christian believers with his fullness, ( Ephesians 1:23;), so had he dealt with the converted Ephesians, who before were dead in trespasses, and dead in sins. Death is often used by all writers, and in all nations, to express a state of extreme misery. The Ephesians, by trespassing and…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1And you hath he quickened - The words “hath he quickened,” or “made to live,” are supplied, but not improperly, by our translators.
