Context of Luke 1:10
8One day, Zechariah's group of priests was working at the temple. He had a special job to do there. 9The priests chose one of their group to go into the holy place in the temple. This time they chose Zechariah. His job was to burn incense there. While Zechariah was burning incense in the special room, many men were outside in the yard. They were praying to God. 11The incense was burning on a special altar, when one of God's angels appeared to Zechariah. The angel was standing at the right hand side of the altar. 12When Zechariah saw the angel, he was very surprised and very afraid.

Cross-references for Luke 1:10
- Leviticus 16:17Aaron must give the offerings to God. He must give them for his family and he must give them for his servants. He must give them for all the people. Nobody can go into the Tent of Meeting while Aaron is in the Most Holy Place. He must be alone when he goes in. And he must be alone until he comes out. He must be alone when he gives the offerings to God. Those offerings make atonement for himself, for his family and for all Israel's people.
- Hebrews 4:14Jesus, the Son of God, helps us as God's most important priest. He is our great priest who has gone up into heaven. We say that we believe in him. So we must continue to show people that we trust him.
- Hebrews 9:24Christ did not go into a holy place that people had made on earth. A place like that is only a picture of the true place in heaven. No, Christ went into heaven itself, where God is. Now he is there with God and he speaks to God on our behalf.
- Revelation 8:3Then another angel came. He stood at the altar where people offered gifts to God. He had a gold bowl to put incense in. He received a lot of incense and he burned it as a gift to God. It made a nice smell and it mixed with the prayers of God's people. The angel offered the incense and the prayers on the gold altar that was in front of God's throne.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10The whole multitude - were praying - The incense was itself an emblem of the prayers and praises of the people of God: see Psalm 141:2; Revelation 8:1.
