Context of John 13:10
8Peter said, ‘No! You will never wash my feet!’ Jesus answered, ‘If I do not wash you, you do not belong with me.’ 9Simon Peter replied, ‘So Lord, do not wash my feet only! Wash my hands and my head too!’ Jesus said, ‘A person who has washed his whole body is completely clean. He needs only to wash his feet. And all of you are clean, except one of you.’ 11Jesus knew already who would sell him to his enemies. That is why he said, ‘Not every one of you is clean.’ 12When he had finished washing the disciples' feet, Jesus put on his coat. He returned to his place at the meal. He asked them, ‘I want you to understand what I have just done for you.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 10He that is washed - That is, he who has been in the bath, as probably all the apostles had lately been, in order to prepare themselves the better for the paschal solemnity; for on that occasion, it was the custom of the Jews to bathe twice. Needeth not save to wash his feet - To cleanse them from any dirt or dust that might have adhered to them, in consequence of walking from the bath to the place of supper. The washing, therefore, of the feet of such…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 10He that is washed - This is a difficult passage, and interpreters have been divided about its meaning. Some have supposed that it was customary to bathe before eating the paschal supper, and that the apostles did it; Jesus having said, “he that hath bathed his body is clean except in regard to his feet - to the dirt contracted in returning from the bath, and that there was need only that the feet should be washed in order to prepare them properly to…Read the comment

He was speaking about being made clean in a complete way. Through his death, he makes a person clean all over. This means forgiveness of sin and a restored relationship with God.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-116-11. Peter saith ... But every word of this question is emphatic. Thus far, and in the question itself, there was nothing but the most profound and beautiful astonishment at a condescension to him quite…Read the comment
