Context of Galatians 5:4
2Listen carefully! I, Paul, tell you this. If you agree that someone should circumcise you, then Christ will be worth nothing to you. 3I will say it very clearly. Every man who lets someone circumcise him must then obey all the Jewish rules. I say this to you people who try to obey the rules of God's Law. If you think that God will accept you as right because you do that, you have turned away from Christ. You no longer agree to accept God's kind gift. 5But if we trust what Christ has done for us, God's Spirit helps us to wait. We are sure that God will accept us as right with him. 6We belong to Christ Jesus. So it does not matter whether anyone has circumcised us or not. The only thing that matters is that we believe in Christ. As a result we will love others in the way that we live.

- Hebrews 12:15Remember that God is very kind. Nobody should refuse to let God help them. Make sure that nobody among you causes trouble so that people turn against God. A person who is angry against God is like poison. He spoils many other people's lives so that God does not accept them.
- 2 Peter 2:20People like that learned about our Lord Jesus Christ, who saves us. As a result, they had stopped doing the bad things that belong to this world. So now, these false teachers are worse than they were at the beginning, before they believed in the Lord Jesus.

Commentaries on Galatians 5:4
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 4Christ is become of no effect unto you - It is vain for you to attempt to unite the two systems. You must have the law and no Christ, or Christ and no law, for your justification. Ye are fallen from grace - From the Gospel. They had been brought into the grace of the Gospel; and now, by readopting the Mosaic ordinances, they had apostatized from the Gospel as a system of religion, and had lost the grace communicated to their souls, by which they were…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 4Christ is become of no effect unto you - You will derive no advantage from Christ. His work in regard to you is needless and vain. If you can be justified in any other way than by him, then of course you do not need him, and your adoption of the other mode is in fact a renunciation of him. Tyndale renders this: “Ye are gone quite from Christ.” The word here used ( ́ katargeō), means properly, to render inactive, idle, useless; to do away, to put an end…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 4People who believe circumcision is needed for salvation depend on the law and themselves, not on Jesus Christ. These people are separated from Jesus and are outside of his grace (see Romans 5:2). They are under the law's judgment. They have lost the benefits of God’s grace (see Galatians 1:6; 1 Peter 5:12).Read the comment
