Context of 3 John 1:2
1This letter comes from me, the leader of the believers. I am writing to you, my friend Gaius. I love you because we believe God's true message. My friend, I pray that God will help you to live well. I know that you are well in your spirit. I pray that your body will also be well. 3I was very happy when I heard news about you. Some Christian friends came here to tell me about you. They said that you are living in a good way. That is the way that God's true message tells us to live. 4I am happy when I hear that my children are living like that. When they obey God's true message, it makes me very happy.

Cross-references for 3 John 1:2
- James 5:12Here is another important thing to remember, my Christian friends. When you want to make a strong promise, never use extra words. Do not say, ‘I promise by heaven,’ or ‘I promise by the earth.’ Do not use any extra words like that. When you say ‘yes,’ that should be enough. When you say ‘no,’ that should also be enough. If you say more than that, God will say that you are guilty.
- 1 Peter 4:8Continue to love each other very much. That is more important than anything else. If you love people, you will forgive them for any wrong things that they have done.

- 1 Thessalonians 2:13There is another reason why we always continue to thank God for you. When we told God's message to you, you knew that it was not human ideas. You accepted it as God's own message, and that is what it certainly is. You continue to grow as believers because of God's message that you heard.
- 1 Thessalonians 3:6But now Timothy has come back to us. And he has told us good news about you. He has told us that you continue to trust Christ and you love one another. He says that you always think about us in a good way. You want very much to meet us again, as we also want to meet you.

Commentaries on 3 John 1:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2I wish above all things - · Above all things I pray that thou mayest prosper, and be in health, ̔· to which one MS. adds , which gives it a different meaning, viz., that thou mayest be sound in the truth. The prayer of St. John for Caius includes three particulars: Health of body; Health of soul; and Prosperity in secular affairs. That thou mayest Prosper and be in Health, as thy Soul Prospereth. These three things, so necessary to the comfort of life…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 2Beloved, I wish above all things - Margin, “pray.” The word used here commonly means in the New Testament to pray; but it is also employed to express a strong and earnest desire for anything, Acts 27:29; Romans 9:3; 2 Corinthians 13:9. This is probably all that is implied here. The phrase rendered “above all things” - ̀ ́ peri pantōn- would be more correctly rendered here “concerning, or in respect to all things;” and the idea is, that John wished…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1-4The apostle John begins his letter with a common greeting. It includes: identifying himself and the person he is writing to, using a friendly greeting, such as beloved, offering wishes for the person's well-being, and expressing thanks for their friendship.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 22. above all things--Greek, "concerning all things": so Alford: in all respects. But Wahl justifies English Version (compare 1Pe 4:8). Of course, since his soul's prosperity is presupposed, "above all things" does not imply that John wishes Gaius' bodily health above that of his soul, but as the first object to be desired next after spiritual health. I know you are prospering in the concerns of your soul. I wish you similar prosperity in your body…Read the comment
