Context of 2 Corinthians 4:12
10As we serve Jesus, we know that we may die as he died. Because of that, our lives show that we live because he is alive. 11Yes, as we live our lives, death is always very near, because we serve Jesus. As a result, people can see in our weak, human bodies that Jesus is alive. So death is near to us, even as we live. But as a result, we are bringing God's life to you. 13This is written in the Bible: ‘I believed in God, and so I spoke.’ We also have the same kind of faith in God. So we also speak God's message, because we believe in him. 14God raised up the Lord Jesus, to become alive again after his death. Because we belong to Jesus, we know that God will also raise us up after we die. Together with you, God will take us to be where he is.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12So then death worketh in us - We are exposed to death. The preaching of the gospel exposes us to trials which may be regarded as death working in us. Death has an energy over us ( ̓͂ energeitaiis at work, is active, or operates); it is constantly employed in inflicting pains on us, and subjecting us to privation and trials. This is a strong and emphatic mode of saying that they were always exposed to death. We are called to serve and glorify the Redeemer…Read the comment

Believers may be forsaken of their friends, as well as persecuted by enemies; but their God will never leave them nor forsake them. The apostle speaks of their sufferings as a counterpart of the sufferings of Christ, that people might see the power of Christ's resurrection, and of grace in…Read the comment

The "death" of Christ manifested in the continual "perishing of our outward man" (2Co 4:16), works peculiarly in us, and is the means of working spiritual "life" in you.
