Context of 1 Corinthians 14:31
29When you meet together, two or three people should speak a message from God. Then the other people there should think carefully about each message. 30Someone who is sitting in your meeting may receive a special message from God. Then, the person who is already speaking should stop. In that way, each person can speak a message from God, one person at a time. Then everyone will learn something that helps them. 32All of you who speak messages from God have authority over your own spirits. 33When we meet together as God's people, he wants there to be peace among us. He does not want to bring trouble. This is what happens in all the churches where God's people meet together.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 31For ye may all prophecy - There is time enough for all; there is no need of speaking in confusion and disorder. Every person may have an opportunity of expressing his sentiments at the proper time. That all may learn - In such a manner that there may be edification. This might be done if they would speak one at a time in their proper order.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 26-33Verses 26-33 Religious exercises in public assemblies should have this view; Let all be done to edifying. As to the speaking in an unknown tongue, if another were present who could interpret, two miraculous gifts might be exercised at once, and thereby the church be edified, and the faith of the hearers confirmed at the same time. As to prophesying, two or three only should speak at one meeting, and this one after the other, not all at once. The man who…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29-32Public prophecy should be shared in an orderly manner, guided by the Spirit, so everyone benefits. Others should evaluate what is said to determine if it is truly a message from God (1 Thessalonians 5:19–21). Those with a prophecy should take turns. Although prophecy is a divinely given message, the speaker still controls it.Read the comment
