Context of 1 Corinthians 10:12
10Do not complain against God. Some of our ancestors spoke like that, and God sent an angel of death to kill them. 11All these things happened to our ancestors so that we would learn from them. They are written in the Bible to teach us important lessons. We are people who live at a time when all things will become complete. If you think that you are standing strongly, be careful! Do not fall down! 13You may often want to do wrong things. The things that are difficult for you are difficult for other people too. Remember that God is always there to help you. He will not let any bad thing be too difficult for you. He will help you to stand against it. When you want to do something wrong, God will make you strong in your spirit. He will show you a way out, so that you do not do anything wrong. 14So, my friends, keep away from idols. Do not worship them.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12Let him that thinketh he standeth - ̔ ̔· Let him who most confidently standeth - him who has the fullest conviction in his own conscience that his heart is right with God, and that his mind is right in the truth, take heed lest he fall from his faith, and from the state of holiness in which the grace of God has placed him. I have already shown that the verb , which we render to seem, to think, to suppose, is used by the best Greek writers, not to lessen…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 12Wherefore - As the result of all these admonitions. Let this be the effect of all that we learn from the unhappy self-confidence of the Jews, to admonish us not to put reliance on our own strength. That thinketh he standeth - That supposes himself to be firm in the love of God, and in the knowledge of his truth; that regards himself as secure, and that will be therefore disposed to rely on his own strength. Take heed lest he fall - Into sin, idolatry, or…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-14Verses 6-14 Carnal desires gain strength by indulgence, therefore should be checked in their first rise. Let us fear the sins of Israel, if we would shun their plagues. And it is but just to fear, that such as tempt Christ, will be left by him in the power of the old serpent. Murmuring against God's disposals and commands, greatly provokes him. Nothing in Scripture is written in vain; and it is our wisdom and duty to learn from it. Others have fallen, and…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 12-13Paul warns the Corinthians not to fall into sin (compare Romans 11:20–22). He reminds them that God is faithful (see 1 Corinthians 1:9; compare Deuteronomy 7:9; 1 Peter 4:19). God will not let them face temptation (compare James 1:2–4) beyond what they can handle. He will always provide a way out.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1212. thinketh he standeth--stands and thinks that he stands [Bengel]; that is, stands "by faith ... well pleasing" to God; in contrast to 1Co 10:5, "with many of them God was not well pleased" (Ro 11:20). fall--from his place in the Church of God (compare 1Co 10:8, "fell").
