Context of Mark 5:12

10And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. 11Now there was there just at the mountain a great herd of swine feeding; and they besought him, saying, Send us into the swine that we may enter into them. 13And Jesus [immediately] allowed them. And the unclean spirits going out entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep slope, into the sea (about two thousand), and were choked in the sea. 14And those that were feeding them fled and reported it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had taken place.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 12All the devils - , all, is omitted by many MSS. and versions; Griesbach leaves it out of the text. ̔ is omitted also by several: Griesbach leaves it doubtful. Probably it should be read thus, And they besought him, saying.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1-20Verses 1-20 See this account of the demoniacs fully explained in the notes at Matthew 8:28-34. Mark 5:4 He had been often bound with fetters and chains - Efforts had been made to confine him, but his great strength - his strength increased by his malady - had prevented it. There often appears to be a great increase of strength produced by insanity, and what is here stated in regard to this maniac often occurs in Palestine and elsewhere now. Dr. Thomson…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 10-13The spirits kept begging Jesus, which shows his authority over them. Jesus allowed them to enter a herd of about 2,000 pigs. The pigs show that this was Gentile (non-Jewish) territory. Some people focus on the loss of the pigs or ask why Jesus allowed the demons to destroy them. But Mark and his audience focused on how Jesus saved the man.Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1212. And all the devils besought him, saying--"if thou cast us out" (Mt 8:31). Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them--Had they spoken out all their mind, perhaps this would have been it: "If we must quit our hold of this man, suffer us to continue our work of mischief in another form, that by entering these swine, and thus destroying the people's property, we may steel their hearts against Thee!"Read the comment
