Context of John 7:27
25Some therefore of those of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill? 26and behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers then indeed recognised that this is the Christ? But [as to] this [man] we know whence he is. Now [as to] the Christ, when he comes, no one knows whence he is. 28Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me and ye know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye do not know. 29I know him, because I am from him, and he has sent me.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27No man knoweth whence he is - The generality of the people knew very well that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem, in the city, and of the family, of David; see John 7:42. But, from Isaiah 53:8, Who shall declare his generation? they probably thought that there should be something so peculiarly mysterious in his birth, or in the manner of his appearing, that no person could fully understand. Had they considered his miraculous conception, they would…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 27Howbeit - But. They proceeded to state a reason why they supposed that he could not be the Messiah, whatever the rulers might think. We know this man whence he is - We know the place of his birth and residence.
