Context of John 7:28
26and behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers then indeed recognised that this is the Christ? 27But [as to] this [man] we know whence he is. Now [as to] the Christ, when he comes, no one knows whence he is. Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me and ye know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye do not know. 29I know him, because I am from him, and he has sent me. 30They sought therefore to take him; and no one laid his hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am - Perhaps they should be read interrogatively: Do ye both know me, and know whence I am? Our Lord takes them up on their own profession, and argues from it. Since you have got so much information concerning me, add this to it, to make it complete; viz. that I am not come of myself; am no self-created or self-authorized prophet; I came from God: - the testimony of John the Baptist, the descent of the Holy Ghost, the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 25-30Verses 25-30 Christ proclaimed aloud, that they were in error in their thoughts about his origin. He was sent of God, who showed himself true to his promises. This declaration, that they knew not God, with his claim to peculiar knowledge, provoked the hearers; and they sought to take him, but God can tie men's hands, though he does not turn their hearts.Read the comment
