Context of Matthew 10:11
9Don’t acquire gold, silver, or copper for your money-belts. 10Don’t take a traveling bag for the road, or an extra shirt, sandals, or a staff, for the worker is worthy of his food. When you enter any town or village, find out who is worthy, and stay there until you leave. 12Greet a household when you enter it, 13and if the household is worthy, let your peace be on it; but if it is unworthy, let your peace return to you.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 11Into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter - In the commencement of Christianity, Christ and his preachers were all itinerant. Inquire who in it is worthy - That is, of a good character; for a preacher of the Gospel should be careful of his reputation, and lodge only with those who are of a regular life. There abide till ye go thence - Go not about from house to house, Luke 10:7. Acting contrary to this precept has often brought a great disgrace on the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 9-15Verses 9-15 See also Mark 6:8-11, and Luke 9:3-5. In both these places the substance of this account is given, though not so particularly as in Matthew. This restraint on the apostles was only in their first mission. Wherever they went they must proclaim, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. They preached, to establish the faith; the kingdom, to animate the hope; of heaven, to inspire the love of heavenly things, and the contempt of earthly; which is at hand, that men may prepare for it without delay. Christ gave…Read the comment
