Context of Mark 1:38
36Simon and his companions searched for him, 37and when they found him they said, “Everyone is looking for you.” And he said to them, “Let’s go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach there too. This is why I have come.” 39He went into all of Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. 40Then a man with leprosy came to him and, on his knees, begged him, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Commentaries on Mark 1:38
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 38The next towns - properly signifies such towns as resembled cities for magnitude and number of inhabitants, but which were not walled as were cities. The Codex Bezae, most of the versions, and all the Itala, read, Let us go into the neighboring villages, And Into The Cities. For therefore came I forth - , for this purpose am I come forth - to preach the Gospel to every creature, that all might hear, and fear, and return unto the Lord. The towns and the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 38And he said unto them - This was said in answer to their “implied” request that he would go and meet the multitudes. “Since the anxiety to hear the truth is so great, since such multitudes are waiting to hear the word, let us go into the next towns,” etc. Next towns - Towns in the neighborhood or vicinity of Capernaum. He proposed to carry the gospel to them, rather than that multitudes should leave their homes and attend him in his ministry. The word…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-39Verses 29-39 Wherever Christ comes, he comes to do good. He cures, that we may minister to him, and to others who are his, and for his sake. Those kept from public ordinances by sickness or other real hinderances, may expect the Saviour's gracious presence; he will soothe their sorrows, and abate their pains. Observe how numerous the patients were. When others speed well with Christ, it should quicken us in seeking after him. Christ departed into a…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 38-39Prayer equipped Jesus to preach, teach, heal, and drive out demons (1:35). The mission of Jesus in Galilee focused on preaching in the synagogues, where he took the opportunity to speak (1:21; Luke 4:16–30). The apostle Paul later took advantage of this same opportunity (Acts 13:5, 14–15; 14:1; 16:13; 17:1). Jesus relied on the Jewish practice of kindness to strangers when he traveled (compare Mark 6:10; Genesis 18:1–8; 19:1–8; Luke 10:7; Hebrews 13:2; 3…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 3838. And he said unto them, Let us go--or, according to another reading, "Let us go elsewhere." into the next towns--rather, "unto the neighboring village-towns"; meaning those places intermediate between towns and villages, with which the western side of the Sea of Galilee was studded. that I may preach there also; for therefore came I forth--not from Capernaum, as De Wette miserably interprets, nor from His privacy in the desert place, as Meyer, no…Read the comment
