Context of Luke 9:29
27Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” 28About eight days after this conversation, he took along Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. 30Suddenly, two men were talking with him — Moses and Elijah. 31They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-36Verses 28-36 Christ's transfiguration was a specimen of that glory in which he will come to judge the world; and was an encouragement to his disciples to suffer for him. Prayer is a transfiguring, transforming duty, which makes the face to shine. Our Lord Jesus, even in his transfiguration, was willing to speak concerning his death and sufferings. In our greatest glories on earth, let us remember that in this world we have no continuing city. What need we…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 2929. as he prayed, the fashion, &c.--Before He cried He was answered, and while He was yet speaking He was heard. Blessed interruption to prayer this! Thanks to God, transfiguring manifestations are not quite strangers here. Their prayers fetch down such…Read the comment
