Context of Romans 4:7
5However, to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness. 6And David speaks likewise of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: “Blessed are they whose lawless acts are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 8Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.” 9Is this blessing only on the circumcised, or also on the uncircumcised? We have been saying that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness.

Commentaries on Romans 4:7
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven - That is, the man is truly happy whose iniquities , whose transgressions of the law are forgiven; for by these he was exposed to the most grievous punishment. Whose sins, , his innumerable deviations from the strict rule of truth and righteousness, are covered - entirely removed out of sight, and thrown into oblivion. See the meaning of the word sin in the note on Genesis 13:13; (note).Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Blessed - Happy are they: they are highly favored; see the note at Matthew 5:3. Whose sins are covered - Are concealed; or hidden from the view. On which God will no more look, and which he will no more remember. “By these words,” says Calvin (in loco), “we are taught that justification with Paul is nothing else but pardon of sin.” The word “cover” here has no reference to the atonement, but is expressive of hiding, or concealing that is, of forgiving sin.Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7-8This quotation from Psalm 32:1–2 follows the Jewish tradition of supporting a reference to the law with one from the prophets or writings. Paul also uses a Jewish way of interpreting Scripture. This method links different quotations by repeating a key word. Here, count translates the same Greek word as "credited" in Romans 4:3.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 6-86-8. David also describeth--"speaketh," "pronounceth." the blessedness of the man unto whom the Lord imputeth righteousness without works--whom, though void of all good works, He, nevertheless, regards and treats as righteous.Read the comment
