Context of Luke 11:30
28But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” 29As the crowds were increasing, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so the Son of Man will be a sign to this generation. 31The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now One greater than Solomon is here. 32The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now One greater than Jonah is here.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 29-36Verses 29-36 Christ promised that there should be one sign more given, even the sign of Jonah the prophet; which in Matthew is explained, as meaning the resurrection of Christ; and he warned them to improve this sign. But though Christ himself were the constant preacher in any congregation, and worked miracles daily among them, yet unless his grace humbled their hearts, they would not profit by his word. Let us not desire more evidence and fuller teaching…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29-30The sign of Jonah might refer to the resurrection of Jesus. Jonah's time in the fish was a sign to the Ninevites that God had sent him, similar to the time Jesus spent in the grave ("in the heart of the earth"; Matthew 12:40). It could also mean that both Jonah and Jesus preached God's warning to repent (see Luke 11:32).Read the comment
