Context of Matthew 27:35
33And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34they offered Him wine mixed with gall (myrrh, a bitter-tasting narcotic) to drink; but after tasting it, He refused to drink it. And when they had crucified Him, they divided His clothes among them by casting lots. 36Then sitting down there, they began to keep watch over Him [to guard against any rescue attempt]. 37And above His head they put the accusation against Him which read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

Commentaries on Matthew 27:35
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 35And they crucified him - Crucifixion properly means the act of nailing or tying to a cross. The cross was made of two beams, either crossing at the top at right angles, like a T, or in the middle of their length, like an X. There was, besides, a piece on the center of the transverse beam, to which the accusation or statement of the crime of the culprit was attached, and a piece of wood which projected from the middle, on which the person sat, as on a sort…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 35And they crucified him - To “crucify” means to put to death on a cross. The “cross” has been described at Matthew 27:32. The usual manner of the crucifixion was as follows: After the criminal had carried the cross, attended with every possible gibe and insult, to the place of execution, a hole was dug in the earth to receive the foot of it. The cross was laid on the ground; the person condemned to suffer was stripped and was extended on it, and the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 35-44Verses 35-44 It was usual to put shame upon malefactors, by a writing to notify the crime for which they suffered. So they set up one over Christ's head. This they designed for his reproach, but God so overruled it, that even his accusation was to his honour. There were crucified with him at the same time, two robbers. He was, at his death, numbered among the transgressors, that we, at our death, might be numbered among the saints. The taunts and jeers he…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 35they had crucified Him: Crucifixion (being nailed to a cross) was not common among Jews. But it was a widespread Roman punishment for military and political offenders. This was especially true for slaves, rebels, and insurrectionists (rioters). The extreme cruelty and public display of crucifixion was a strong warning to society. The Romans would flog victims (beat them with whips). Then they would crucify the victims naked. This added to their…Read the comment
