Context of Mark 15:24
22Then they brought Him to the place [called] Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23They tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh [to dull the pain], but He would not take it. And they crucified Him, and divided up His clothes among themselves, casting lots for them to see who should take what. 25It was the third hour (9:00 a.m.) when they crucified Him. 26The inscription of the accusation against Him had been written [above Him]: “THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 22-32Verses 22-32 The place where our Lord Jesus was crucified, was called the place of a scull; it was the common place of execution; for he was in all respects numbered with the transgressors. Whenever we look unto Christ crucified, we must remember what was written over his head; he is a King, and we must give up ourselves to be his subjects, as Israelites indeed. They crucified two thieves with him, and him in the midst; they thereby intended him great…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 24Crucifixion began with the Medes and Persians in the 600s BC. It spread to the eastern Mediterranean in the 300s BC through Alexander the Great. It became the main form of capital punishment in the Roman Empire until AD 337, when Constantine banned the practice. Crucifixion was slow, shameful, and full of pain.
