Context of John 4:42

40So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they asked Him to remain with them; and He stayed there two days. 41Many more believed in Him [with a deep, abiding trust] because of His word [His personal message to them]; and they told the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; for [now] we have heard Him for ourselves and know [with confident assurance] that this One is truly the Savior of [all] the world.” 43After the two days He went on from there into Galilee. 44For Jesus Himself declared that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

Commentaries on John 4:42

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 42We have heard him ourselves - On seeing and hearing our Lord, the faith of those who had already believed on the woman's testimony was abundantly confirmed; and, besides those, may others believed who had not heard the woman speak. This is indeed the Christ - The promised Messiah. The Savior of the world - Not of the Jews only, but of the Samaritans, and of the whole Gentile world.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 39-42Verses 39-42 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him, … - There is seldom an instance of so remarkable success as this. From a single conversation, in circumstances, in a place, and with an individual little likely to be attended with such results, many sinners were converted; many believed on the testimony of the woman; many more came to hear, and believed because they heard him themselves. We should never despair of doing good in the…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-42Verses 27-42 The disciples wondered that Christ talked thus with a Samaritan. Yet they knew it was for some good reason, and for some good end. Thus when particular difficulties occur in the word and providence of God, it is good to satisfy ourselves that all is well that Jesus Christ says and does. Two things affected the woman. The extent of his knowledge. Christ knows all the thoughts, words, and actions, of all the children of men. And the power of…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 42The Samaritans had heard Jesus and believed his message for themselves. They were no longer depending only on the woman’s testimony. They called him Savior of the world (see also 1 John 4:14). This title shows that they understood something important. Salvation was not limited to one ethnic group. As Samaritans, they knew they were separated from the Jews. Yet they recognized that Jesus came for all people. His mission was not only for Jews, but for the…Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 39-4239-42. many ... believed, &c.--The truth of Joh 4:35 begins to appear. These Samaritans were the foundation of the Church afterwards built up there. No miracle appears to have been wrought there (but unparalleled supernatural knowledge displayed): "we have heard Him ourselves" (Joh 4:42) sufficed to raise their faith to a point never attained by the Jews, and hardly as yet by the disciples--that He was "the Saviour of the world" [Alford]. "This incident…Read the comment
